The three continue to clash, albeit Mard undeniably regains the upper hand as he dodges Gray and Natsu’s attacks, while simultaneously lunching his own. Gray uses his Ice-Make: Gungnir to distract Mard, allowing Natsu to appear from within the spear of ice and ambush the Demon; to no avail. The three cease fire as Mard begins to explain the power Curses rely on: grudges, envy, hatred and all negative emotions exuded by living organisms. [407] However Gray blocks the attack, which causes half of his body to be demonized, seemingly falling defeated. [408] He later participates in a tag combination with Natsu; using his Ice Devil’s Zeroth Destruction Bow to hit Mard Geer only seconds before Face is activated. [409]

Natsu comments happily that everything is finally over, though Gray replies that they still need to destroy the Book of E. Natsu reminds Gray that Igneel told him not to touch it and to just return it to him, though Gray angrily reminds the Fire Dragon Slayer that E. is supposed to be the strongest of Zeref’s Demons, and that they have a duty to get rid of it before he can ever revive. Now angry, Natsu demands Gray hand the book over; however, before they can continue their fight they realize that the Face bomb has finished its countdown, and is firing. [410] In that moment, Igneel falls to the ground with Acnologia pinned underneath him, and screams for the humans not to give up. With his words, the Dragon parents of the Dragon Slayers all appear from the skies, flying around the continent and using their large bodies to smash through the multiple Face bombs as Gray sighs in relief at their last minute victory. [412] Igneel then flies away to continue battle with Acnologia, telling Natsu to grab E.’s book, which Gray answers in reply to Sting’s confusion by showing him the book in question. He then reminds Natsu that he made a promise to defeat E. no matter what, [413] however the book vanishes from his hands yet again and reveals itself to now be in the hands of Zeref, who arrives claiming that the book is extremely important to him. [414] He is shocked at Zeref’s ruthlessness when the Dark Mage claims that Mard is unnecessary and burns him after reverting him to book form. [415] He helplessly curses Zeref when he departs with the Book, [416] then yells out in bewilderment to Natsu when the latter runs off to try and help Igneel against Acnologia. [417]

After the fight against Tartaros ends, Gray, along with the other Mages, witnesses the Dragon Slayers reunite with the Dragons, albeit temporarily, as the creatures have already expended most of their remaining strength to destroy the threat of Face. As they ascend to the sky, they swear to watch over mankind for all eternity. [418]
One week later, Gray returns to the wreckage of his childhood town in Isvan and visits the grave of his parents, only to find out that Juvia has followed him there. Upon learning that it was she who killed the necromancer that was controlling his father, which caused him to die once more, Gray grabs Juvia’s coat and breaks down into tears before hugging and thanking her for setting his father free, as well as apologizing to her for her having to do such a thing. [419] After calming down, Gray tells Juvia that he will defeat E. at any cost. [420]
