When looking out upon pan-evangelicalism, a diverse movement primarily consisting of Christians claiming a quasi-commitment the Gospel, one can be informative post left groping to explain the rise of the mega-church within that community of faith. During this last generation, over 1,600 super congregations, primarily evangelical, have emerged on the American religious scene. Can the megachurch movement be accounted for reason that church-goers want to be part of something big, where for reason of the strength and unity of their numbers, they really feel that God is at work?

Even churches have caught on to the public’s desire for 24/7 entertainment. As a consequence, a large number of evangelical churches are now driven by a need to fulfill this desire in their congregants. And what better way to pack the house in ginormous auditoriums than to offer a 90 minute stage show enhanced with state-of-the-art sound, lighting and video systems.

The individuals covered in this book are remarkable and fascinating. I particularly enjoyed reading about Robert Reed Church, who started his working life as a slave on his white father’s riverboat and yet worked his way to wealth and prosperity. I also enjoyed Annie Turnbo-Malone’s story of her childhood passion for fixing hair that turned into a life calling of helping black women through making and selling hair products tailored to them at a time when no one else was doing so. This work of non-fiction tells the story of the first black millionaires in America’s history. These include six entrepreneurs including Mary Ellen Pleasant, who capitalized on the Gold Rush; Robert Reed Church who made his wealth off of landowning; Hannah Elias, who received most of her wealth from her wealthy white lover; O.W. Gurley who developed a section of Tulsa, Oklahoma into a town for prosperous black professionals; and Annie Turnbo-Malone, and Madame C.J. Walker who both made their fortunes off of black hair care products.
